Although people always talk about Live Aid, the first charity concert in history took place in 1971. It was George Harrison’s initiative to help Bangladesh, a very poor country in South Asia next to India, which has the highest population density on the planet. It was precisely in 1971 when the country gained independence from Pakistan but the war and the scourge of cyclones produced situations of great shortages and hunger for a large part of the population.
Great musicians such as Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan and George Harrison came together in two concerts in August of that year at Madison Square Garden for a benefit concert whose proceeds went entirely to help the inhabitants of Bangladesh. A triple live album was recorded from this concert and released on 20 December under the title "The Concert for Bangladesh".
