I am in training to become Beskidy Mts (Western Carpathians) guide. It’s a vast range (over 500km long and 20-30km wide) and we are required to know its topography, points of interest, tourist trails and nature. The latter is my weakest area. I recognise only few trees - such as pines, oaks or maples - and anything at my feet is simply “green stuff”. A lot to learn.
A practical way was to visit a local botanic garden. It’s quite small and doesn’t have any spectacular collection of exotic plants. But it does have the plants common in the forests of the Polish Carpathians. All trees and many shrubs and flowers are signed and there are boards where one can practice matching tree leaves with its fruits or cones. I think I’ll be a frequent visitor there. The entry ticket is less than $0.5!
