This morning I was reminded once again why I love working with older children.

It began with a request to join the baby group, thrusting me into a world of bottles, diapers and endless rocking.

Verbal interaction was limited to a symphony of babbling, crying and babbling, with me being the main interlocutor.

My fitness tracker, usually a source of pride, remained disappointingly inactive - walking with three babies in a special stroller does not exactly break speed records.

My colleagues and I realized we needed to find another way before the predicted downpour came, and decided to take a brisk walk.

The large triple stroller was loaded with our precious cargo.

With the goal of exposing the little ones to fresh air, soothing their sobs and secretly getting some much-needed exercise for ourselves.

While the hike offered a welcome change of scenery, it wasn’t exactly an adventure that was adrenaline-pumping.

Let’s just say a particularly snappy diaper incident added an unexpected layer of excitement (details I’ll spare you).

But fortunately our supply of diapers is sufficiently replenished in all sizes

Fortunately, in the afternoon I was back in my familiar territory - the schoolyard with my older students.

Here was a normal atmosphere.

We enjoyed the fresh but cold spring air, the playful jokes and the joy of learning. When the rain showers surprised us my warm winter jacket and scarf kept me warm.

Despite the slow morning start, my trusty pedometer revealed a respectable 7,223 steps I had taken throughout the day.

This experience was a microcosm of the wonderful diversity that comes with working with children of all ages.

Although the challenges and rewards differ, the overall feeling remains the same - a tremendous sense of accomplishment from encouraging the growth and development of every child I encounter.
