I did some walking this afternoon and worked in the backyard. The rain had stopped, and the sun came out. It was a nice time to work in the yard, but it was a bit muddy by the blackberry hedges.
I took out a really large old blackberry root with a shovel. I felt kind of bad about removing such an old bush that had provided lots of good berries. It was close to the fence, and I’ve been on a bit of a rampage to cut back the blackberries after finded some damage that the rats had done in the crawlspace.
I looked really carefully under the porch to see if there were any rat tunnels, but I could not find any. It is possible that I fixed the problem the last time I put a new layer of concrete by the crawlspace entrance. Perhaps the damage to the insulation in the crawlspace was done the last time they were in there, and no recent damage was done.
At this point, I am thinking that I’m just going to try to get out all the deadwood from the hedge and not try to remove any more of the older bushes. If I can keep things cleared out, it will be a lot easier to harvest the berries, and leaving more of the berry bushes will control the water flow better. I’m not sure what will grow well in the wet conditions besides the blackberries.
I still might still be able to put in a tree or two if I keep the blackberries trimmed back.
