Blackbutt Creek Orchids : April 12 2025

It’s the weekend. It’s weekend walk to op shop at the local church. Walked up there after breakfast under a blue sky. Looking for larger scale glasses for gin - down to one. No luck - got a bag of cars for Ollie and an iron for $8. The one in the house down south died. Spent a busy morning after that - accounts - boring

Did go walking late down to Blackbutt Creek. Walk the whole track easily takes the day over 10k steps. Always orchids in the rainforest section in autumn - first up small nodding greenhood. This one with pollinator - light a bit low for perfect focus - and the bug kept moving away from the camera

Better focus with a bit more light- pterostylis hispidula - small nodding greenhood

Found a cluster of these greenhoods in an uphill spot

Front on photo is a bit harder for focus - sharp greenhood on account of the sharp pointy bit of the galea (the helmet)

There were lots of mushrooms to photograph - most were deleted. The white bits like to grab the light and the details goes too - this one had fab beige colours and sriong textures across the ripples

Grand gum trees too in the late afternoon light

Was pleased to find a few more clusters of pterostylis acuminata flowering

Flip side - a good 10 plants open here. Pretty sure I would have found some on the low side of the track. Did not look today. I did share the finds with 3 ladies walking past - the ladies like orchids

I did check the side of the track walked last week - remember the blue mushrooms? They have come on a bit since last time. Have done some research since last week’s photos.

Some are hallucinogenic - some are poisonous. They look less unfriendly this week as the blue moderates

Twin sharp greennhoods - great to find 3 locations with good colonies

Woollsia pungens -a few plants

Garden escapee? No idea what it is. iNaturaliste is suggesting a salvia = garden escapee

Banksia twins

On the mossy bank in the rainforest - chiloglottis leaves opposed on the ground and a leaf forming up - thelymitra based on last year sighting here

Excuse the text in the middle of the photo = finger trouble

Now this was a photographer challenge - a twig in focus - two mushrooms - the top one a bit bigger than a matchhead. The bottom one - less than half.

Camera draws too much light from the mushrroms but the twig is in focus - award winning photo potential

Did find the next orchid group flowering- acianthus pusillis - even more of a photo challenge as the flowers are tiny. The pink version of acianthus pusilllis

Was hoping to find a few ant orchids going - it was a long walk to find them

Chiloglottis seminuda is my guess - the calli stay in the top half of the labellum

Some subtle differences - more calli - more prominent mound - hard to say - same or not

Mushroom time - this time in brown hugging the log.

Going to rest with chiloglottis seminuda

1st
Last few - terracotta pink mushroom

Epacris pulchella - NSW coral heath flower - pink form

Spied this wriggly form - well it was a cluster of wriggles. Butterfly caterpillars getting ready for winter.

Did cook dinner - stir fry up some bite sized prawn meat

Saute onions, garlic, red pepper and mushroom and Thai seafood paste - toss in the prawns and some green goodies

Serve with rice

Late night sending out emails for the latest launch
