Grosvenor Fire Trail Wahroonga for spring orchids : September 6 2024

The morning just went by - am getting better. But not motivated to get out on the bike. Pushed myself to go for a close in train-bike combo. Timing was not good as got to the station just as the kids were going to cadet meeting a few rail stops up. Was busy but as the girls were all cadets they were being managed well by their officers

Went to Wahroonga station and then rode to Grosvenor St fire trail to look for spring orchids

First umbrellata burchardia for the season

Sun orchid time. This one has me confused as it has key differences to what I thought at first. The yellow on the cone is quite different - see the next photo

Spotted sun orchid - thelymitra ixioides

Side on of the first orchid shows the similarity of structure

Red spider grevillea

Sun orchid budding

Fairy orchid on the side of the main trail

A little side on of caladenia alata

Found a few - note the two yellow teeth either side of the labellum. Flower is tiny - say the size of a nickel

Over the shoulder view

Leaf and hairy flower spike

Epacris flower I have not seen - maybe brevifolia

Two tone pea flower

Front on

Was expecting to find waxlips - colony of 6 open in a known general area

Small waxlip orchid - caladenia glossodia

Saw this spike growing on the edge of one of the run-offs - leek orchid - first time seeing flowering here and also this year

Flower is very small and hard to get focus - sharing this one as the head of the spider is in focus - noticed the web first

A few different angles to get an idea - like the frill of a dress shirt

Prasophyllum brevilabre and an insect of some form up top

One last photo of the leek orchid

Spikes of the lemon leek orchid coming up in known spot

Fab place to walk if one can block out highway noise

Snake orchid high up

New trail access sign tells me the track has been fixed. Was closed a long while

Right there was this budding sun orchid - more delicate than the others

A flash of white like Christmas flowers

Checked the sites for flying duck orchids. None open and this one has been eaten by a weevil

Spotted sun orchid on the way back

Mini flannel flower - size of a US penny

Drumstick flower

Big head of sun orchid flowers

Caladenia alata

Budding waxlip - pretty hairy

More lemon leek spikes

Just holding upright with all the flowers

Pink version of the sun orchid

Spiky and tiny

Dampiera purpurea - had to photograph one as colour is same as sun orchids. I checked every one

Clustered pea flowers

Spider grevillea

Walked the side track hoping to find bearded orchids - none - this little white flower stands out in numbers

And a cluster of 6 fairy orchids here too

Cycled back via old haunts - bottle shop in Turramurra to buy beer - train from there. Got to build the train-bike habit

My wife is still sick and not wanting to eat. Cooked lamb cutlets and potato and green veges. My wife ate some veges.
