Today, 24 November, is the 19th anniversary of the death of Snowflake, the only known albino gorilla in the world to date.
Snowflake was found by a farmer in Equatorial Guinea in 1966; he was a defenceless infant cuddling his dead mother.
Snowflake was sold to a Spanish anthropologist and zoologist who was conducting primate studies in the area. After a short period of time, the albino baby was transferred to Barcelona. For 11 months he was raised in the private home of a veterinarian before being transferred to the city zoo where he remained until his death.
Snowflake became an emblematic and representative icon of the city.
Although he had numerous offspring, none of them had the genetic trait of albinism.
Snowflake died at the age of 39 after a long illness affecting his skin.
