Wczoraj wybraliśmy się do Akwizgranu. Kilka razy w roku tam jeździmy na tańsze zakupy, podobnie było tym razem, ale przy okazji wybraliśmy się na króki spacer po mieście. Wyszliśmy poza zwyczajowo odwiedzane Adalbertstraße i okolice Aachener Dom.

[ENG] Yesterday we took a trip to Aachen. We go there several times a year for cheaper shopping, and it was the same this time, but we took the opportunity to go for a short walk around the city. We went beyond the usual Adalbertstraße and the area around Aachener Dom.

W mieście dominują budynki powojenne, więc nie zachwycają architektonicznie, ale zdarzają się ciekawsze kamienice i budynki.

[ENG] The town is dominated by post-war buildings, so not architecturally stunning, but there are some more interesting townhouses and buildings.

Niedaleko centrum znajduje się jeden pierwszy niemiecki kościół, którego patronem jest święty Jakub. Według legendy kościół ufundował Karol Wielki po powrocie z wyzwolenia grobowca św. Jakuba. Świątynie wzniesiono w XII wieku, jednak pierwotny budynek został rozebrany w 1885 roku i ponownie postawiony wykorzystując do budowy 87 metrowej wieży kamienie z poprzedniej budowli oraz materiał z rozebranych murów miejskich. Wieża jest najwyższą wieżą kościelną w Akwizgranie i można na nią wchodzić tylko dwa razy w roku. Można w każdej chwili wejść do przedsionka kościoła i przez kratę podziwiać eklektyczne wnętrze w spokojnych niebieskich barwach.

[ENG] Not far from the centre is one of the first German churches, whose patron saint is Saint James. According to legend, the church was founded by Charlemagne after he returned from liberating the tomb of St James. The temples were built in the 12th century, but the original building was demolished in 1885 and re-erected using stones from the previous building and material from the demolished city walls to build the 87-metre-high tower. The tower is the highest church tower in Aachen and can only be climbed twice a year. You can enter the vestibule of the church at any time and admire the eclectic interior in calm blue colours through the lattice.

Spacerując trafiliśmy też na kilka rzeżb z brązu, w mieście jest ich bardzo dużo. Autorem rzeżby „Kehrmännchen” z 1973 roku jest Heinz Tobolla. Rzeźba powstała w ramach kampanii „Saubere Umluft” (czyste powietrze). Rzeźba przedstawiająca postać mężczyzny zamiatającego ulicę jest uznaniem dla życia i pracy prostych ludzi.

[ENG] Walking around we also came across some bronze sculptures, there are a lot of them in the city. The author of the sculpture ‘Kehrmännchen’ from 1973 is Heinz Tobolla. The sculpture was created as part of the ‘Saubere Umluft’ (clean air) campaign. Depicting the figure of a man sweeping the street, the sculpture is an acknowledgement of the life and work of simple people.

Inną ciekawą rzeźbę z brązu autorstwa Karla-Henninga Seemanna znaleźliśmy na wąskiej Kockerellstraße. “Reiterringkampf” stanęła w tym miejscu w 1975 roku i przedstawia dwie pary spięte w walce podczas dziecięcej zabawy "zapasy koni".

[ENG] We found another interesting bronze sculpture by Karl-Henning Seemann on the narrow Kockerellstraße. “Reiterringkampf” stood there in 1975 and depicts two couples tense in battle during a children’s game of "horse wrestling".
