Today morning one Bangladeshi patient, who happened to be a day labour, came to my chamber with a history of injury to his right eye. He was working with a hammer when suddenly a nail broke and hit his right eye. After that he started having pain and reduced vision.

I examined him and found redness & swelling in the right upper lid. Inside the eye, the lower part of iris (central coloured portion) was red because of collection of blood in the anterior chamber of the eye. [Anterior chamber is the space between cornea and iris). This condition is known as hyphema.

This was an ophthalmic emergency. I advised them to go to eye specialist ASAP.
