Was going to be one of those days with heaps of rain forecast. I dragged myself out to do some shopping for a nice Valentines Day dinner. Shops were busy - took ages to find a car park. Bumped into a friend on the way out - nice chat.
Stopped at western gate of Ku-ring Gai Chase NP to look for midge orchids - cloudy and dry to start = no umbrella. Fringe lily - the standard version
NSW coral flower
New spot for cryptostylis orchid leaves - no flower spikes
The mission is to find brittle midge orchids - a new plant emerging with some buds
What is this? It moved when prodded. Spider
Spider grevillea opening up
One more midge orchid forming - makes 3 from last week’s one
Last week’s one getting the droops - brittle midge orchid - genoplesium baueri. This is an endangered orchid with only 200 plants in 13 locations - 3 so far here
Three baueri is a good find but I was sure I would find them. This was the find of the day - white form of the fringe lily
Front on
Walked further to find other midge orchids. Rain started and it pelted down. Track became a creek. No umbrella was a mistake. At least I had a rainjacket - was soaked. Did not help when I got to the car, left the keys on the roof. Got more wet working that out
Dinner worked well - had 4 courses planned: sashimi, oysters, Thai fish cakes are a favourite. They are super easy with good ingredients
Did the preps for course 4 - it will be tomorrow’s dinner - snapper in a rich tomato, white wine and basil sauce
My wife came home with an orchid - oncidium
There is an art to buying orchids - buy with unopened buds - one opened in the car but there are two to go
