My home away from home is my classroom.
Everything has its own place, the daily rhythm is soothing, and my colleagues and I are on the same page.
It nourishes a positive atmosphere for the children.
Today, however, my adaptability is being tested.
I have been asked to help in another class and location, which I am sure will not be a problem - the children are the same age as my students.
Usually, getting acclimated to one another just takes a few minutes.
Surrounding unfamiliarity presents a greater challenge.
Unlike my carefully organized space, everyone sets up their classroom differently.
And some are more tidy than others.
What works for one teacher may not work for another.
I imagine someone entering my classroom and feeling the same disorientation.
The constant search for basic supplies - tape, puzzles, notebooks - and lack of a system, saps my usual energy.
Thank goodness the beautiful weather allows us to spend most of the day on the playground.
Fluffy white clouds drift through the clear blue sky.
I take a seat on a bench and fall under the spell of their quirky shapes.
Above me, a playful scene unfolds - a crocodile, a lizard and a turtle frolicking together.
My train of thought is interrupted by a cry for help.
My namesake sits stiffened on a green stool, petrified by a “huge” spider.
I approach smiling, find the culprit after a brief search (it was not as big as she described!) and carefully remove it.
When we are back inside our classroom, the youngsters go wild with some crayons and work on challenging animal puzzles.
It is lunchtime, and some are struggling to eat even two sandwiches and keep their eyes open.
These little ones are waiting for a well-deserved nap.
In a special designed room with bunk beds, they fall asleep for an energizing two to three hours, after which they wake up refreshed and ready for the afternoon.
Finally it’s my turn to have my much needed lunch break.
However, the colleague assigned to watch my class arrives late, cutting my break in half.
Disappointment overwhelms me.
We have very different personalities and often clash.
Is she doing this intentionally?
Fortunately, our interactions are rare and I have learned to ignore her disruptive behavior out of self-preservation.
This stolen break would have recharged me for the second half of the day.
Rather, I have to struggle with depleted vitality.
Professionalism takes possession of me and I make sure my performance remains unaffected.
The outdoor area becomes our playground for the afternoon.
The sandbox, slide and bikes are a great success and time seems to fly by while everyone has a good time.
Exhausted but fulfilled, I return home, throw together a quick dinner and retreat to my inviting hammock to enjoy the last warm day.
Shivering from the cold I wake up at a quarter to 11.
Perhaps a better idea to crawl between my comforter, find my favorite heat-source 🥰 and head for dreamland.
Wishing you all the best in life and much health.
